Get ready for an entertaining explosion of dance for all ages and cultures. “‘Fire & Powder’ is a Bollywood twist on the Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers theme, inspired more by West Side Story,” explains Achinta S. McDaniel, artistic director of the Blue13 Dance Company, which is presenting the world premiere of the show Aug. 3 at the John Anson Ford Theatre.

Featuring everything from contemporary Indian dance, Bhangra, hip-hop, break dance, and tap, the story unfolds when Romeo’s Bollywood Montagues clash with Juliet’s hip-hop Capulets. “Making Juliet (Bridget Wilson) the edgy one and Romeo (Arun Mathai) more traditional provides a great twist to the story. There are dance battles defending the pride of their houses that play out with a tremendously diverse cast,” says Achinta, who plays Rosaline. And there are many talented locals to cheer for, more than 20 in the huge dance ensemble.

“If you love dance, if you are mesmerized by Bollywood production numbers, if you love romantic stories — all of that and more is rolled up into this colorful high-energy production,” according to Achinta. Plus great music is featured, with modern rock, Bollywood hits, and original compositions.

Prior to the show, the Ford Theatre plaza will have vendors and performers encouraging everyone to choose a side, with Team Capulet supporters wearing yellow, and Team Montague in blue. When seated, they have the option to sit on different sides supporting Romeo or Juliet’s house, or sit in the center to cheer both. And some in the audience have learned a dance on YouTube and will perform from their seats or in the aisles for one special show-stopping number.

Blue13 Dance Company is a contemporary Indian dance theatre ensemble based in L.A., led by artistic director/choreographer, Achinta McDaniel, a pioneer of contemporary Indian dance in the U.S.
