From Cocoon to Chrysalis — Butterfly at the Write Act

World Premiere Musical by Michael Antin at Write Act Repertory. From L: Jake (David Michael Trevino) receives a precious reminder of life. Nick (Jeremy Herzig), Klara (Noel Britton), and Max (Alexander Lvovsky).

“Butterfly” is a beautiful, poignant story of a young woman, Klara (Noel Britton) who must deal with her past filled with pain and squelch the demons within. The symbolic butterfly, which emerges from the cocoon and spreads her wings to fly, resonates throughout this musical drama, from the ceramic artwork adorning the set to the tattoo etched in Klara’s skin — as a constant reminder of her yearning for freedom.

The play has a very modern touch to it, with referral to cyber-space/technology (online chatting), but the age old themes of betrayal, trust, lust and abuse are forever evident. The acting is superb, with standout performances by multi-talented David Michael Trevino as Professor Jake Kelly; Noel Britton as Klara (with amazing vocals and stage presence); and show stealer, adorable Jeremy Herzig as Nick.

Even the smallest of details — every element (lighting, direction, writing, music and lyrics) was done with extreme care and finesse.

The story itself is based on playwright/composer Michael Antin’s true life experiences and the psychological impact that strikes deep chords in today’s fragile society, with broken families rampant, and the search for a soul mate and healing. It’s a lot like Sleepless in Seattle, where two lonely hearts search for each other but don’t know it.

“The first half is melodramatic, in the style of Tennessee Williams; the second half is lighthearted, whimsical — a ‘happily ever after’ fairy tale,” Antin says.

Write Act keeps up its reputation: a small theatre producing big moments.

“Butterfly” will run through February 19, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. A “Meet and Greet the Artists” reception will follow each show. The Write Act Repertory Theatre is located at 6128 Yucca St. For ticket information, call (323) 469-3113, or visit
