As most teenage daughters will do, Kasey Wilson dug in her heels when her father tried to share his enthusiasm for the classic noir films of the ‘40s and ‘50s. To humor him, she watched “The Maltese Falcon” but when it came to 1945’s “The Big Sleep” – which featured a plot so convoluted that even its author, Raymond Chandler, confessed that he didn’t know “who’d done it” – she couldn’t help but think that the genre was ripe for parody.
A few years later, her fertile imagination kicked out a one-act noir spoof titled “Marked for Love,” in which hard-boiled private detective Bolt goes up against baddie The Thin Guy. The play won second prize and an ‘Audience Favorite’ award at the Attic Theatre’s 2008 One-Act Marathon, and by then, she herself was firmly entrenched in the ‘40s fashion trend that has been gaining ground in L.A. “The clothes look better, so you feel better,” she smiles, coyly declining to say just how much she spends on her vintage clothing habit. Her love of snappy comedy, though honed by several years training as a writer for the Groundlings, remains undiminished. After the success of “Marked for Love,” she wrote another one-act for Detective Bolt titled “Of Dicks and Dames.”
“The whole evening will have a noir theme,” she says, pointing to the Attic’s lobby, which is soon to be transfigured into a speakeasy. “My only hope that when people leave, they won’t be thinking ‘I just learned something’ – they’ll be thinking, ‘Ow, my sides hurt from laughing so much!’”

“Nights of Noir” opens Friday, May 22 and will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm through June 27 at the Attic Theatre (5429 W. Washington Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90016. – between Fairfax and Hauser). Tickets may be purchased by calling (323) 960-1055 or online at www.plays411.com/nightsofnoir.
