Critically acclaimed playwright Nicky Silver’s writings come to life at the Raven Playhouse in North Hollywood. “The Maiden’s Prayer” explores five individuals whose lives intertwine. The characters’ self-destructive romantic fixations and unresolved family issues blur that thin line between wanting love and needing love in “The Maiden’s Prayer.”
A talented cast including Lauren Hattaway, Colbert Alembert, Courtney DeCosky, Issac Nippert and Ben Hensley bring the characters to their fullness. The play mediates on romance, suggesting that the randomness of love can be a blessing as well as a curse.
A powerful and interesting piece, the play explores the dark and knotty rivalry between two sisters — Libby (Courtney DeCosky) and Cynthia (Lauren Hattaway) — over Taylor (Issac Nippert) the man they both love or perhaps think they do. There is also Taylor’s childhood friend Paul (Colbert Alembert) who may long to be more than just a friend and the colorful gay character always looking for love (Ben Hensley), who pops in and out of the proceedings and always brings a laugh.
Director Tim Landfield’s cast glides through unexpected twists and changes in emotions with ease setting up the interesting and unexpected ending. We explore all sort of dating arrangements and even the cycles of a marriage.
