A night of dazzling singing and bawdy humor, Upright Cabaret’s “Night Devine” at Vermont Restaurant featured Grey’s Anatomy TV star Loretta Devine vocalizing about love in all its permutations. Singing standards, contemporary love songs and her own compositions, Devine revealed both her playful and wistful sides in a passionate, energizing performance.
Devine got the party started with the rockin’ “One Night Only,” demonstrating a powerful range to her voice. She turned up the heat with such numbers as the double entendre “Sweet Home Cookin’ Man” and “Just the Two of Us.” She also showed a more pensive side in such songs as “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and “All the Great Lovers.”
Throughout the evening, Devine teasingly adlibbed with the audience about current events like the Tiger Woods’ driving accident and Michael Jackson situations, along with reciting some of her own slightly risqué poetry. She even ventured out into the restaurant and roped in humorous audience participation with “Gotta Be Starting Something.”
The small band provided excellent backup for the singer, blending well with her sound, especially music director Kelly Park’s jazzy, lush piano playing.
Another exciting, high-energy night of high-class, charming supper club entertainment for hip, in the know audiences by the hot Upright Cabaret.
“Night Devine” played Friday, December 4 through Sunday, December 6 at 9pm at Vermont Restaurant (1714 N. Vermont Ave. in Los Feliz). Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. For more information, visit their web site, www.uprightcabaret.com.
