Watching a Troubadour Theatre Company production always brings a smile to the face, and Walkin’ in a Winter One-Hit-Wonderland follows suit. Blending the Troubies sense of anarchic mayhem, frivolous fun, and eclectic pop culture references, the show offers something for everyone from eight to eighty.
A walk down memory lane, highlighting video clips and memories from past holiday shows set to “one-hit wonders,” Walkin’ in a Winter One-Hit-Wonderland focuses on the Winter Warlock (Beth Kennedy), who gets the Dickens treatment a la Ebenezer Scrooge, viewing his life from past to future after he quits the show. All ends in a joyous celebration of the holiday spirit and the Troubies.
Director/performer Matt Walker pulls everything together as the sardonic emcee, an understated anchor for the hilarious shenanigans. He blends a festive mélange of raucous revue numbers, comic audience participation, video clips, and furious adlibs into an energetic, somewhat naughty office party.
Singers Lisa Valenzuela and Katie Nuñez belt out numbers, Rick Batalla wickedly spins adlibs, and Katherine Donahoe struts her sexy stuff, supported by talented and unflustered musicians keeping a steady, understated beat. Production values and choreography are also first-rate.
The Troubies and their antics are critic-proof, with ringmaster Walker seeing to it that critics’ press kits were spirited away early on so that they could join in the gleeful celebration, a tad subdued per past shows.
A combination swinging holiday party, wacky cabaret, and sketch-comedy show, Walkin’ in a Winter One-Hit-Wonderland offers hip, let-your-hair-down, rockin’ entertainment.
