Milt Chortkoff was born in Brooklyn on January 9, 1929, and he came to Los Angeles in 1946. Milt’s cleaning experience began more than 67 years ago working at Hollyway Laundry & Dry Cleaners, his father’s business in Echo Park. After an illustrious career of running innovative, customer-service-based cleaning businesses in Los Angeles, he retired in 1985. But retirement was not to be for a man with “cleaning solutions” in his blood! Milt came out of retirement in 1988 to consult with the owners of Regal Cleaners and eventually purchased the business and renamed it Milt & Edie’s, a loving tribute to his wife of 58 years, Edie.
With a fantastic location in the heart of Burbank’s Media District, Milt wove his decades of cleaning, marketing, and promotional expertise into an experience no customer can forget. Defining his mission statement as “all customers leave happy, always,” he backed it up by offering superior services: tailors available seven days a week; two-hour cleaning and shirt service; instant alterations available at no extra charge; an “on time or it’s free” guarantee; and even free popcorn and refreshments.
2007 was a banner year for Milt. First, he was named International Drycleaner of the Year by the International Drycleaners Congress for his commitment to quality work and customer service. Second, his ultimate cleaning dream was realized: he transformed Milt & Edie’s Drycleaners into a 24-hour cleaners … open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (366 days in leap years)!
Within the last few years, Milt expanded his services to include Couture Cleaning, mobile tailoring, designer purse cleaning, and wedding gown cleaning and preservation. He even added “& Tailoring Center” to Milt & Edie’s Drycleaners’ name, an act that helped motivate him to launch the “definitive” customer service just last month: 24/7/365 tailoring! “We have a dozen tailors on staff and several more in training, so now we have enough to take care of everyone’s tailoring needs day and night,” Milt says, adding that “instant” alterations will now be available at no extra charge “around the clock!”
Starting at Noon on Thursday, Jan. 9, people are welcome to come into Milt & Edie’s for birthday cake to celebrate Milt’s 85th birthday and wish him a “happy” one. As a matter of fact, another birthday cake will be served at Midnight although Milt won’t be there… he’ll be at home dreaming about how to make Milt & Edie’s even better and customers even happier.
