Playboy Jazz Festival Presents “Jazz On Film” with Archivist Mark Cantor

The Playboy Jazz Festival will once again bring to life some of the greatest moments in jazz when the festival presents the acclaimed “Playboy Jazz On Film” program, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) film department. (The annual event will be held Thursday, June 11 at 7:30pm in LACMA’s Bing Theatre. Admission is free but tickets are required.)
Renowned music and jazz film archivist, Mark Cantor, will host the program of rare film clips featuring a series of performances highlighting some of the most important and beloved jazz artists in the world.
In addition to the film clips of classic jazz greats Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Bill Evans and Lenny Tristano, this year’s program will feature footage of the three legendary performers Bud Shank, Louis Bellson and Freddie Hubbard. The event will also honor three living masters of jazz Buddy Collette, Gerald Wilson and Ray Anthony.
The 2009 edition of “Jazz On Film” will include an eclectic slate of music. The clips range from Dixieland interpretations and Wing to more modern jazz performance by Collette, Evans and Tristano. As always, there will be many surprises, including a featured theme set that spotlights some of the great dancers from Harlem’s Cotton Club and the Apollo theatre during the 1930’s and 1940’s.
