“Cake is our passion… Our clients the inspiration,” says Joeleen Medina, owner and founder of A Sweet Design Custom Cake Studio. “It gives me the greatest joy to celebrate the good things in life,” adds Medina. This 30-year-old entrepreneur was classically trained at the California School of Culinary Arts, Le Cordon Bleu Pasadena. Upon graduation she worked as a pastry intern at several pastry shops throughout Manhattan, as well as several Hollywood Hot Spots, before opening her own business.
One of the most important ingredients to the success of Medina’s baking is the love and dedication she pours into her recipes. A Sweet Design was recently awarded the #1 Spot for Best Cakes in L.A., the Brides Choice award from WeddingWire.com, and the Small Business of the Year Award from the United Chambers of Commerce. Even with all her recognition, Medina remains down-to-earth, eco-friendly and works hard to be as green as possible. And the results are remarkable! Renowned for her outstanding wedding cake designs, each cake is like the work of a great impressionist and made with exquisite vision, form, texture and color. (As a result, they book up months in advance.) A perfect example of Medina’s decorative skills can be found in her 4-tier wedding cake iced in rich chocolate ganache; each tier is wrapped with a hand-rolled ivory fondant ribbon with an intricate piping cascading down the sides, and the finishing touches are purple orchids. Favorite flavors include: Bavarian cream with chocolate chips and raspberry jam framed in vanilla and chocolate cake, or strawberry Bavarian cream and Champagne. How about a mint chocolate chip cake (just like the ice cream)? Her cupcake fans adore her carrot and red velvet cupcakes with sweet cream cheese frosting (yum yum)!
Family is extremely important to Medina. Her husband and mother assist her along with a hired staff. Her husband, Miguel, with his carpentry background, helps design the 3-D cakes. “Personalized cakes (sculpted cakes) bring a lot of personality to a party,” explains Medina. A Sweet Design has made 3-D cakes look like F-16 Fighter jets, skateboards and guitars—and can sculpt cakes into any size and shape. Even a cake in the shape of a cupcake! All of the 3-D cakes are done without any baking molds.
Medina gives her clients the utmost care and attention (and manages to bake and decorate as well). Customer service is very important to A Sweet Design, and after four years, Medina has developed a loyal clientele who have become like family to her. “It’s awesome to see little girls scream for joy when they see their birthday cakes!” A Sweet Design delivers throughout the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, Santa Clarita and Pasadena.
