Film and TV actress Cecilia Leal portrays Mikayla on the hit show from Marvel, Cloak & Dagger, in its second season on Disney’s Freeform. Leal’s character, new this season, meets lead character, Tandy (Olivia Holt), in a counseling group for abused women. The show centers around Tandy and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) who acquired superpowers while falling in love.
Does Mikayla have a superpower? One of Leal’s powers is keeping secrets, a good thing because Marvel’s very private about scripts. “It’s really exciting to be a part of the Marvel universe,” says Leal admitting she personally would like to be able to fly.
Who needs flight when you have all Leal’s super skills? She trained at the prestigious NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theater Wing. Along with acting there was also dance training and Bouffon, the art of French clowning. “The classes were rigorous mentally and physically, but it helped me with my acting and to become a really great collaborator,” Leal revealed.
Leal did share that her character is shy, not unlike Leal in some ways. “I’m sort of an extroverted introvert, “she explained, “I try to reserve my energy for the set where you have to be open and emotionally vulnerable.”
Yes of course she can sing too. She headed up a band in college. “I love singing,” Leal says of her contemporary style, “But I find it easier to be in front of people acting in the role of a character.”
The most marvelous thing about Leal may be her pride in her heritage. “I am a first generation American, my mother is Argentinian, my father Cuban, and it’s a huge part of my life,” said the Miami native.
Leal’s work can also be enjoyed in Five Feet Apart from CBS Films, TV series The Purge and Mr. Mercedes, and as the lover of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character in an upcoming Netflix science fiction/t hriller, title yet to be released.
