I recently sat down and broke Naan Bread with Abdul Kadir of Royal Curry Café, and to call our meal a “feast” would be an understatement.
Inside this authentic family-owned restaurant, we started with Papadom, made with lentil flour; Onion Bhajjes, deep fried crispy onion balls; and Samosas, crispy turnovers filled with meat or vegetables. As I reached for seconds, Abdul warned me to save my appetite, and boy, I’m glad I listened, because up next was the main course.
Their Chicken Tandoori and Chicken Tikka, the former with bone and the latter without, are marinated in yogurt, mild spices, and herbs and roasted in a clay oven. Tender, juicy, and tasty.
Their award-winning Chicken Tikka Masala had me salivating at the very sight of it. It’s Chicken Tikka sautéed in masala gravy with tomatoes – worthy of all the awards, ribbons, and gold stars in the Valley.
The Lamb Dopiza is cooked with sweet onions and green peppers in a thick curry sauce. It, too, is attractive and succulent. We dipped our Naan Bread in the curries, a communal experience made all the more special by the pleasant conversation.
The Vegetable Curry consists of mashed veggies cooked in curry sauce. Healthy and delicious. This, along with the Palao Rice and the Basmati Rice, complimented the meats for a flavorful, robust meal. And everything on the menu can be ordered to your liking: Mild, Medium, Hot, or Very Hot.
Open seven days a week, Royal Curry Café offers Lunch Specials Monday thru Saturday 11 a.m.—3 p.m. They also offer Dinner Plates and Chef’s Specials. Besides their Chicken and Lamb Dishes, they also have Beef, Seafood, Vegetable, and Tofu Dishes.
