When you can spend a Thursday morning having breakfast on the rooftop of the L’Ermitage Hotel, it’s a good day.
Sponsored by Fanatiks (a sports social network), the Cozumel government hosted a press conference for the inaugural Cozumel Celebrity Golf Tournament, to be held May 31 to June 1. Hill Street Blues’ Ed Marinaro represented the celebrities who include mostly sports idols, Bob Beamon, Jorge Campos, Antonio Freeman, Eddie George, Dave Parker, Bruce Smith, and others.
There are a total of 18 celebrities who will play at the Cozumel Country Club, one of the best golf sites in the Rivera Maya. It boats a 6,734 yard, par 72 course layout designed by Nicklaus Design Group that emphasizes the ecological preservation of the location’s precious natural surroundings.
There is no cost to play; it is invitation only.
Besides Maninaro, panel members included Raul Marrufo, Undersecretary of Tourism Promotion for the State of Quintana Roo, Rodrigo Navarro, CEO Fanatiks, and Alex Vega-Miestro, Director QR Celebrity Golf. You could not miss the two gorgeous models who posed (like the infamous Angelina Jolie pose at this year’s Oscars) on either side of the stage.
The tournament, as well as activities for VIP guests, will air on Fox Sports in Mexico, a week after the tournament. Plans are still underway for US broadcast.
Other sponsors include: Alacran, Avis, Senor Frog’s, and Mexico Se Siente!
Said Marinaro, “I’ve been to Cancun, but never Cozumel. [We know he likes to fish in its remote areas.] What a great way to spend some time golfing, drinking tequila, being with my wife and 10-year-old son, and at the same time, help make money for charity. As an ex-football player, I look forward to spending time with these guys and telling them how it used to be!” (The charities he refers to: Children’s International and Dr. Sonrisas aka Dr. Smiles.)
Marrufo, one of the few who donned a suit and tie on this very warm day, quoted beautiful ancient Mayan prose. He added, “December 21 is not the end of the world. It’s the beginning of a new era.”
VIP guests will stay at Sabor Cozumel Resort and Spa. The word “sabor” means flavor, and the visit has promise for golfers and guests a flavorful trip!
