That’s hardly how you’d expect an article by a CHURCH about EASTER to begin. But it’s not too different from the way things are beginning on Easter Sunday at Toluca Lake United Methodist Church. Their resurrection celebration is inspired by the “set-up,” “A lady walks into the tomb….” and the hilarious “punch line” that proceeds. Says Pastor Jane Voigts, “Although we don’t usually think of Easter as comedy, there are so many joyful, surprising, creative, even ridiculous proclamations about life after death, sin, and hopelessness that come with a visit to ‘the emptied tomb,’ why not look at the whole thing as a great, sacred opportunity to laugh? In fact, in the ancient Christian Orthodox tradition, folks gathered at the church the day after Easter to tell jokes! That’s the Spirit we want to bring to Toluca Lake.”
Fun, funny Easter Worship at Toluca Lake United Methodist Church is this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. In addition to a classic brass quintet, prayers, Easter hymns, and a sermon, there will be comedy provided by “The Disciples,” TLUMC’s resident improv comedy troupe, and Pastor Jane, herself a former professional comedienne. Also on hand is special guest musician Ed Sussman, playing the theremin, an electronic instrument often used in sci-fi and horror film scores. (Ed was the thereminist for Mars Attacks!)
There are fun activities for the children, too: Children’s Sunday School during the worship hour, an Easter Egg Hunt following worship, and childcare offered throughout the morning. Your children are also invited to stay in the sanctuary and enjoy the worship experience with you.
