Being Thankful

“In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” – Albert Schweitzer

“Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.” – Will Rogers

“Keep your eyes open to your mercies. The man who forgets to be thankful has fallen asleep in life.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual…. O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.” – Henry David Thoreau

“I’m thankful for a pair of shoes that feel really good on my feet; I like my shoes.

“I’m thankful for the birds; I feel like they’re singing just for me when I get up in the morning … Saying, ‘Good morning, John. You made it, John.’ I’m thankful for the sea breeze that feels so good right now and the scent of jasmine when the sun starts going down.

“I’m thankful.” – Johnny Cash

“If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.

“If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75 percent of the world.

“If you have money in the bank or in your wallet, you are among the top 80 percent of the world’s wealthy.

“If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.” – Author Unknown

“You cannot be grateful and bitter.

“You cannot be grateful and unhappy.

“You cannot be grateful and without hope.

“You cannot be grateful and unloving.

“So just be grateful.” – Author Unknown

“A woman has got to love a bad man once or twice in her life, to be thankful for a good one.” – Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

“If you can’t be content with what you have received, be thankful for what you have escaped.” – Author Unknown

“Got no check books, got no banks. Still I’d like to express my thanks – I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night.” – Irving Berlin

Irving Berlin had a wonderful way of expressing his gratitude through his songs. Another great example is from the film White Christmas when Bing sang the following;

“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep and I fall asleep counting my blessings. When my bankroll is getting small I think of when I had none at all and I fall asleep counting my blessings.

“I think about a nursery, and I picture curly heads, and one by one I count them as they slumber in their beds.

“If you’re worried and you can’t sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep, and you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.”

And what am I thankful for? I’m thankful for many things including my wonderful wife and family including my brand new grand nephew, Cole, born just a few weeks ago. I’m thankful for my nephew Benjamin, who just celebrated his bar mitzvah and looked so grown-up and handsome standing at the beamer.

I’m thankful for my health, my good luck, and each and every new day. I’m also thankful for the inventions of motion picture film and audio recording, without which I would have no movies to watch and no music to listen to since I can’t abide the majority of claptrap they put out today. Remember to be thankful this week, no matter what it is you’re grateful for.
