Show Choir Extravaganza

The City of Burbank and Burbank Arts for All Foundation are excited to announce the All American Show Choir Super Show, a spectacular one night only concert event.

This highly anticipated evening, which also celebrates Burbank’s Centennial anniversary, brings together the national championship show choirs from Burbank High School and John Burroughs High School as they perform their show-stopping numbers to benefit arts education programs for all students in every Burbank public school. And, for the first time ever, in grand finale style, The All American Show Choir Super Show will culminate with all 110 members of Burbank High’s “In Sync” and John Burrough’s “Powerhouse” uniting as one super choir while performing on stage together. Announcements of other special performances as well as surprise celebrity guest appearances are forthcoming.

Party of the Century

The City of Burbank celebrates its 100th year in 2011 and marks the occasion with a host of free festivities citywide, including the highly anticipated “Party of the Century” in Downtown Burbank on July 8. A free community celebration, it is planned as a massive, one-day street festival with top entertainment, fireworks and more.

The Byrd Show

The Brand Library Art Galleries is proud to present The Byrd Show: 40 Years of Art & Design, the first West Coast retrospective of renowned artist and graphic designer David Edward Byrd’s career. The exhibit will run from June 11—July 22, with the opening reception on Saturday, June 11, from 6—9pm.

With a career spanning more than four decades, David’s work is firmly entrenched as part of our visual culture. The selection of the rock ‘n roll and musical theater greats that David Byrd has worked with over the years is a veritable who’s who, including The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Guitar Quartet

On Sunday, June 12, at 3 p.m., the Associates of Brand Library & Art Center will host the fourth concert in its annual music series. The Helios Guitar Quartet will be performing the complete first book of the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach arranged for four guitars. This concert will be in the Brand Library Recital Hall. Poetry Contest

A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a contest sponsored by the Christian Poets Guild. The contest is free to enter and open to poets of any age. Fifty prizes totaling more than $5,000 will be awarded.

Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by guild contest director Dr. Jeremy Carnegie. “We love encouraging poets,” he says. “We trust this contest will produce exciting results.”

Entries must be received by June 30th and may be submitted by mail or e-mail.

Members of Burbank’s Chamber of Commerce and friends join Center Director Jena Terranova for the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of the new location of Kumon of Burbank-West on Friday, June 3, 2011. The new center, located at the Burbank Towne Center at 3808 Verdugo Ave., began accepting students in March of this year for sessions on Mondays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Terranova’s two young children are also enrolled, with her son Joshua being ranked #1 in North America for his advanced reading level in his age group thanks to his study in the Kumon method.
