A Memorial Dedication
How many of you are familiar with the Blue Star Memorials? These are markers and plaques placed along with plantings and gardens along our highways, parks and chosen areas all across the United States. This was started in 1944 as a tribute to all the men and women who served in our armed forces.
Shirley Duenkel, the vivacious President of The Toluca Lake Garden Club, spent lots of time and energy in obtaining a Byway Marker to be placed in our own Toluca Lake! Paul Ramsey, founder of Ramsey Shilling Real Estate, agreed to have it placed on a special area by their building on Forman Avenue, known as Village Square.
There are only six of these markers in the entire San Fernando Valley. A huge crowd of local citizens, firemen and dignitaries showed up for the dedication service of this special event held recently. City Councilman Tom LaBonge officially led this wonderful program, and noted that he helped in locating the huge rock used for the base which was found in the quarry in Griffith Park. Richard Bogy, past President of the Chamber of Commerce, spoke as well as Robin Tokorski, past California State President of the Garden Club. A formal unveiling followed with cheers and applause from the attendees.
Following the program, everyone was invited for a special treat of pies at Marie Callendars restaurant nearby. When you get a chance, go by and see this notable tribute now added to our own neighborhood.
