Berserkly, California

So just what is it about Berkeley? Is it something in the drinking water? Is it the weather — does the low morning fog dampen the brain cells? Ever since the 1960s hippie, dippy days when Berkeley was the birthplace of the dropout and drop acid crowd, it has not exactly been a bastion of Norman Rockwell America.

The people who live in Berkeley are simply not normal. The latest example of this was the recent City Council resolution to roll out the welcome mat to freed Guantanamo Bay detainees. It was voted down at the last minute 4-1 with four council members abstaining, but the mere fact that the thing got far enough to be put to a vote says volumes about the Berkeley mentality.

The city was considering inviting “one or two” detainees to live in Berkeley once they were cleared of wrongdoing and released from the U.S. detention facility in Cuba. The former detainees would live with local families and non-profit agencies would help with resettlement.

The resolution also would have asked Congress to allow cleared Guantanamo detainees to resettle in the U.S. The Berkeley proposal was put forth on the recommendation of its Peace and Justice Commission. Peace and Justice Commissioner Rita Maran said that the idea was to invite to Berkeley “the kind of people you’d like to have living next door to you or dating your cousin.”

The resolution states that Berkeley should invite detainees who have been cleared of wrongdoing to move to the city because “the city has a longstanding policy in support of peace and justice, including previously welcoming refugees from other countries who unjustly suffered imprisonment, torture and related traumatic experiences.” Supporters say it’s one way to do right by those who were wrongly detained by the federal government. Once again it is, “Bad America! Bad, evil America!”

Fortunately and sanely, not everyone was on board with the resolution. Critics blasted the plan, saying it is an empty gesture that distracts from more serious issues facing the city.

“This seems like grandstanding to me,” City Councilman Gordon Wozniak said. “I’m not sure why the Peace and Justice Commission is taking this up —other than to get on Fox News.”

Or maybe how about because these people are just freakin’ nuts?

The Berkeley City Manager Phil Kamlarz advised the council to take no action because “federal law explicitly prohibits the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States.”

Yeah, you see President Obama signed that measure into law last month, but these jokers just want to make their little socialistic, America-hating statement anyway. By the way, not all of the nuts in North America are on the West Coast; I’ve heard of at least two other U.S. cities — including Amherst, Mass. — which have approved similar resolutions.

But if you’re thinking Berkeley is simply a very liberal society, open to all ideas and viewpoints, think again. These are the same people that demanded that the Marine recruitment office be shut down. They not only held protests against the Marines, they vandalized the office. The cowards did it after hours when the Marines were gone, of course — breaking windows and splattering paint all over. See how peaceful these people are?

The Berkeley Marine Corps Recruiting Center protests began in Sept. 2007 when a group of protesters from Code Pink began periodically protesting in front of a United States Marine Corps Officer Selection Office by standing in front of it holding banners and signs. On Jan. 29, 2008, the Berkeley City Council passed a series of motions concerning the recruiting center ordering the city clerk to draft a letter calling the Berkeley Marines “unwelcome intruders.”

That’s right, the lovely good-hearted people of Berserkly, California want the U.S. Marines the hell out of their city, but will welcome with open arms Islamo-terrorist prisoners to move right into their neighborhood and start dating their cousins. People that have openly declared war on us. Again I ask: is it the drinking water; is it the air they breathe? What is it that makes these northern Californians insane? We need to find out so that, hopefully, medical science can someday find a cure for whatever it is that causes the Berkeley Disease. To all my dear liberal friends I ask you: do you still think these people are normal?
