JACKIE: We want to Talk about the fifty-year history of a serene hotel that has more than stood the test of time. This would be a good time for you to consider a get-away to this charmed location, as there are many anniversary deals at the Sheraton Maui.

Since our own Anniversary is coming soon, we took an early trip, due to a sweetly eventful Dec. 2. I can hardly believe it will be 10 years….

DAVID: I admit it; I envy the folks who live in Maui all year round.

Every day the brilliant sun rises on the wild beauty of their land, the clear majesty of their beaches, the warm smiles of their neighbors. Luckily, JJ and I can occasionally experience the heart-pounding excitement of landing at Kahului, jumping into a rented convertible and heading up to Ka’anapali Beach. Each time we thrill to what we experienced the first time we honeymooned in Maui ten years ago. Once again, we arrived with the spirit of Aloha as our companion.

JACKIE: Romantically resting next to the magical Black Rock, on the best part of the long arcs of Ka’anapali beach, is our destination – The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. It’s luscious being welcomed with a beautiful lei. Then entering our lovely room is breathtaking … but the bluest blue ocean calls. We don our swimwear, grab the goggles, and in moments, we commune with the sea.

Then it’s Poke time. It’s a ritual to head to Lahaina town’s Safeway to pick up the perfect poke. Poke (pronounced pok-eh) is not merely seasoned ahi: It’s a lifestyle food and an affordable delicacy, like Hawaiian style tuna tartare in chunks. (Our room had a big empty refrigerator! Very helpful.)

Then back to my ocean and the sea turtle that graced us with its presence. Beautiful, generous turtle.

DAVID: While JJ surrenders to the surf, I’ll mention the fact that Starwood’s Sheraton is beautifully laid out so it retains a feeling of intimacy and island peacefulness. We had a great view of the ocean along with a private lanai outside and Sheraton’s famous Sweet Sleeper bed, and all the desired bells and whistles. The resort features excellent restaurants and we enjoyed the Black Rock Terrace, with open air dining, for it’s lavish buffet breakfast, the spectacular sunset Luau (several bars), and the splendor of Black Rock itself, with its nightly cliff diving performances. I mean, this is what resort is all about!

JACKIE: The fine dining at Black Rock Steak and Seafood Restaurant happens when the sun goes down. Flexible seating indoors or terrace seating outside offers the gentle evening breezes, accompanied by an enchanting view of Pu’u Keka’a in the distance. (Go on the Internet to check on the menu and the Pu’ Keka’a.) The choices are elegant and local, freshness is the key; talent in the kitchen is obvious and beautiful. And I have to mention the Luau, besides delicious island specialties, friendships, helped by the entertainers, were easily made. It was quite a coincidence to be sitting right next to Eric Radomsky and Lisa Atlas (who is a Tolucan and lives right down the street from the Falcon Theatre!) Aloha-ha.

DAVID: The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is sharing a historical perspective of the hotel as part of its yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration. Located in the Hoku Rotunda at the pinnacle of Pu’u Keka, guests may view photos and newspaper clippings from the resort’s early days as the first hotel on Ka’anapali Beach.

The opening of hotel in 1963 marked the onset of tourism to Maui and Ka’anapali and has served as the backdrop for vacation memories for generations of families, romantics, and sports greats from around the world.

“We are pleased to share the stories with our guests and associates who lived this history with us as well as the future generations,” exclaims General Manager Tetsuji Yamazaki. “This is a celebration for all of us!”
