On Friday, Feb. 10, the children at Joyce’s Toluca Lake Preschool & Kindergarten participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Hop-A-Thon to help raise money for the organization devoted to finding a cure for these diseases. More than 80 children participated and they exceeded their fundraising goal by raising more than $1,500.
The Hop-A-Thon was in honor of Ryan Compton, now age 6, who attended Joyce’s Preschool three years ago. He was diagnosed at age 24 months with Leukemia and as a result of the resources at City of Hope Cancer Center his Leukemia went into remission, allowing him to attend Joyce’s as a preschooler. In July of 2010 his test results showed his Leukemia had returned and it was determined at that time a bone marrow transplant would be necessary. His family is pleased to announce that he is once again in remission and was able to participate in the fundraising event.
“We were so happy to have been able to contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of Ryan,” said Joyce’s Preschool co-owner, Rocky Karbel.
Over the past year, Joyce’s Toluca Lake Preschool & Kindergarten has increased its contribution towards non-profit organizations helping others in need. Last year the families at Joyce’s donated unwrapped toys for military families given to Soldier’s Angels and along with the efforts of co-owner Linda McManus of Enrichment Educational Experiences (E3), an after-school enrichment program, they collected books for the Save The Children organization.
