It’s time to see the best new films being released this year before anyone else gets to see them. That’s the joy of going to the popular KCET Cinema Series — it’s bragging rights as you let your friends know you’ve seen the buzz-worthy films prior to their release, and many times even before industry previews.

KCET’s spring edition of the Cinema Series returns to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood for eight weeks starting Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. with The Face of Love starring Ed Harris and Annette Bening. Showbiz-insider, film expert and critic Pete Hammond hosts the Cinema Series and promises a stellar line-up of movies on Feb. 25, March 4, 11, 18, and 25, and April 1, 8, and 15, all on Tuesday nights with a reasonable 7 p.m. screen time. The movies are followed by a Q&A conducted by Hammond with the filmmakers and/or stars. Director/co-writer Arie Posin is scheduled to be the special guest after The Face of Love screening.

Sometimes you never know who is going to show up for the always lively Q&As. Hammond closed the fall season with a screening of August: Osage County (distributed by The Weinstein Company) and had the stars of the incredible cast, Meryl Streep (Oscar nominated for her role), Margo Martindale, and Abigail Breslin as surprise guests who answered questions from the audience. And everyone was delighted with a spontaneous song from Meryl and Margo!

Actually, most of the films Hammond presented during the fall series wound up with many nominations and much critical praise. He’s a fellow who knows how to pick ‘em, because he attends the international film festivals and markets to find the best of Hollywood and independent films. You’ll be supporting our “very independent” community-based KCET public television station headquartered in Burbank, and all the great programming it offers. And thanks go to the E. Hofert Dailey Trust for returning as the Presenting Sponsor for this season’s Cinema Series.

Now in case you were wondering, here’s the intriguing synopsis for the first film in the series The Face of Love. Five years after the death of her beloved husband Garrett (Ed Harris), Nikki (Annette Bening) meets a man who seems his exact duplicate. Not only does this stranger possess the same deeply lined face and startling blue eyes, he also shares Garrett’s kindness, humor, and passion for art. And yet he is a stranger.

Romance blossoms between Nikki and this alluring doppelgänger, but she can’t bring herself to tell him the truth about what drew her to him. So she hides her photos and prevents him from meeting friends and family. Still, she can’t resist taking him to all the old haunts. It isn’t a question of if the truth will come out, but when. Arie Posin directed and co-wrote this emotional drama about how we cope with loss, live in the moment, and ultimately move forward. Get your KCET Cinema Series tickets now.
