Known for putting out its own original work, Sherman Oaks’ Whitefire Theater Company follows up their rapid-fire, ten-minute “Summer Shorts” with 2014’s first short series of the year. This time the Whitefire duo, director Brian Rasmussen and producer Jake O’Flaherty, are back for the concise-comedy challenge with many of the same actors from last year in “Spring Shorts: An Evening of Original Ten Minute Comedies.”

The notable standout of the night comes from Toni Perrotta. Perrotta is a Groundlings-trained comedian who both wrote and stars in ‘Shrink This,’ a playful take on the liberties therapists lord over their patients when they’re actually the ones who should be lying on the couch.

Bette Smith’s ‘A Difficult Pill to Swallow’ takes an honest look at the communication gap between generations, proving once again that women should be creating their own work to act in.

While the other shorts of the night generate a few belly laughs, plenty of cleavage, and a six-pack to wash your clothes on, “Spring Shorts” gives non-committal theatergoers an opportunity to spin the roulette wheel of funny. Like the weather on the Westside, if you don’t like it, give it ten minutes and it’ll change.

“Spring Shorts: An Evening of Original Ten Minute Comedies” runs from March 4-25, Tuesday nights only at 8 p.m. at the Whitefire Theater located at 13500 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at or call 800-838-3006. The running time is approximately 100 minutes including a 10-minute intermission.
