Geeks! Onstage at Write Act

Writer of “Geeks! The Musical,” Thomas J. Misuraca.

With the upcoming new Comic-Con documentary by Morgan Spurlock and the unexplainable appeal of The Big Bang Theory (recently the highest rated show, overpowering American Idol), it is no surprise that Geeks! The Musical, the brainstorm of Thomas J. Misuraca, will “fit right in” at its debut at the Write Act Repertory.

Comic book collecting and fascination with this entire genre is a big part of life and pop culture, and a musical presentation will give its audience a peek into the state of mind and intrigue of a group of geeks at their mecca: a comic book/sci-fi convention.

Geeks are coming much more to the forefront/mainstream, rather than just a subculture of society. They are now our computer whizzes/techies, and not the stereotypical pimply-faced, socially awkward, nerdy teenagers of the past. They now come in all shapes and sizes but are still geeks at heart.

Misuraca is proud of his production, and still in disbelief that it’s all coming to fruition. “If I went back in a time machine, I wouldn’t in my wildest dreams believe it is coming true!” He describes the show as a musical rom-com where “boy geek meets girl geek, loses her, and then tries to regain the relationship.” It all takes place in a comic book convention, much like the famed Comic-Con in San Diego, with a couple of sub-plots for added mystique: the quest to find a rare issue of Batman, and an artsy artist and his goth girl/best friend trying to sell their avant-garde comic book, yet facing obstacles. The idea of the show first sprouted when Misuraca initially wrote a parody song listing all the actors of Doctor Who (one of his great inspirations) as a teaching method. He enjoyed this process so much and wanted to take it to the next level. “The next thing I knew, I was writing a musical parody about geeks, with so many stories to be told.” Director Bennett Cohon has been attached to the project since its original stage reading. He’s on the board of Write Act, and with the positive buzz, they have put the show on the calendar for March.

For Thomas J. Misuraca and all cast and crew, this is a dream come true — a brainstorm of creativity, a labor of love, sure to be an epiphany on stage.
