Harbor Starring Matthew Lillard at the Victory Theatre
Harbor is a new show from playwright-director Jon Cellini at the Victory Theatre Center, called one of the bravest and most prolific production theaters in the Los Angeles area. Adding to the appeal of a great new play are its stars, Matthew Lillard and Mary Thornton Brown.
Lillard has a lot of excitement in his life right now, with the release of The Descendants film with George Clooney, and producing and directing his first feature film The Fat Kid Rules the World. But even with all of that, he says “doing theater reignites my energy and love of acting. Being in the moment is what theater is about, and the feeling is second to none.”
Why did he choose Harbor? Lillard reveals, “It’s an opportunity to work with a dear old friend, Jon Cellini. He’s incredibly talented, and has written a great part in an exciting play. I had to do it.”
It’s an emotionally dynamic relationship drama that is skillfully balanced with humor, according to producer Suzie Gardner. The story has a single mom, Jules (Thornton Brown), dealing with the return of Tommy her ex-husband (Lillard), following the death of her father. The situation sets off a powder keg of emotions, and explores what it takes to say good-bye.
“This straightforward yet exciting play lives in the moment in a way people can relate to,” Lillard explains. “The great thing is that this delivers in both the comedy and drama.”
The Victory Theatre Center’s Harbor opens Oct. 27 and has a limited run through Dec. 3, playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $24, and preferred seating is $34. Group and senior rates are available.
