Joel Martin Quintet Jazzes It Up

From left, Dave Johnstone, Joel Martin, Kelly Jane, Erik Kertes and Zack Hexum.

I had the distinct pleasure of catching a set of the Joel Martin Quintet at Lucy’s 51 in Toluca Lake. The good news is that they will be back in November to entertain once again.

The group features sweet and sassy Kelly Jane on vocals as she evokes the spirits of greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn over a bed of pedal steel and sax. Throw in an aggressive rhythm section and you’ve got the Joel Martin Quintet. The quintet specializes in classic song selection with all the best, heart-felt standards such as “Ain’t Misbehaving” and “Honeysuckle Rose.”

It was fun to hear some of these old standards brought to a new and up tempo light. Though classic, everything felt fresh as well.

Delivering the instrumentals for this jazzy experience are Joel Martin on the pedal steel, Dave Johnstone on drums, Zack Hexum on tenor sax and Ian Walker on upright bass. Here is a group that shares their joy in entertaining as well a passion for jazz.

The Joel Martin Quintet will be back at Lucy’s 51 November 15 starting at 9:30 p.m. for two sets. $5 cover charge. Lucy’s 51 has a wide range of drinks and eats. Grab some wine or perhaps a martini and enjoy the jazz.

Lucy’s 51 is located at 10149 Riverside Dr. (Cross street Forman) in Toluca Lake. There’s plenty of parking in the rear. For more information, call
