Lillias White Swings “A Woman on Love”
June 3rd was “A Grand Night for Singing,” as actress/singer Lillias White joyfully poured out her heart on all types of love and romance during Upright Cabaret’s presentation of “A Woman on Love.” Playful, flirty, and happy, White carried on a friendly conversation on “Life, Love, and Laughter” with her grateful audience.
The extremely gifted White brought emotional truth to her singing. White spoke wistful yearning in “Breathe,” hot passion in the rhythmic “Addicted to Love,” and sorrow and regret in “Human.”
Her voice soared in rapture, belted in passion, and quivered in pain, while showing great range and skill in scat phrases throughout a few songs. White also articulated emotion through her lovely hands, physical body movements, and expressive face.
Music Director Michael Orland provided both swingy and lush, romantic arrangements to the songs, and his classic piano work perfectly complemented White’s gorgeous voice. The small band of accompanists also gave a nice, understated sound, with individual moments to shine.
White’s male backup singers demonstrated fine three-part harmony and teasy chemistry and choreography with her. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, making the evening even more enjoyable.
Actor Keith David made a surprise appearance in the role of standup comedian, throwing out naughty jokes on relationships and sex, with great skill in timing and mimicry.
Lillias White employed her gorgeous voice in “A Woman on Love” as an instrument for praise of love and singing, burning down the house with talent.
