Trendy restaurants come and go, but Ernie Jr.’s Taco House on the Glendale border in Eagle Rock is a bone fide institution, celebrating its 70th Anniversary next year.
How do you get to be a culinary legend in your own time? It boils down (pun intended) to the dependable home-style food and the friendly unpretentious service.
The flavors of Ernie Jr.’s were created and time-tested by the Cruz family in the cultural region of Northern Mexico. It’s there where the family began creating authentic Mexican recipe dishes. And yes, there really is an “Ernie” in charge of operations here — Mr. Ernie Cruz Jr., now in his 60’s and still referred to as “Jr.”
Customers say they appreciate the vintage ‘70s decor, the sweetest waitresses, free chips, the “super delicious salsa,” great prices, fast service, generous servings, and a beautiful hillside view.
With the exception of occasional new items, not much has changed with the restaurant’s very complete menu throughout the years. Ernie Jr. says that the selections will always stay true to the roots of his family’s recipes.
