There’s a whole lot of shakin’ going on at the historic El Portal Theatre with the must-see musical All Shook Up. It’s a feel good show featuring Elvis’ greatest hits sung by a fun and frisky cast who take the audience on a fabulous nostalgic romp through rock’n’roll and romance.
After the spirited “Jailhouse Rock” number launches the show, a mysterious roustabout Chad (played with rock star perfection by Brent Ramirez) rides his motorcycle into a quiet town. He stirs things up and the lovely local mechanic Natalie (the dynamic Natalia Vivino) immediately falls for him and his swiveling hips hoping for “One Night With You.”
Energetic song and dance numbers from Elvis’ hit parade include “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Me Tender,” “Blue Suede Shoes” and many more. The huge cast offers strong vocals with every tune backed by a full rocking band.
There are many scene-stealers starting with the mighty Vonetta Mixson as Sylvia who runs the local honky-tonk and Philip McBride as the lovelorn Dennis. Other showstoppers are Scott Strauss, Zoe Reed, Sam Herbert, Tracy Lore and the knockout Laura Dickinson. All are truly great.
Director Barry Pearl deserves kudos for the sense of fun that infuses the show. It rocks at a rapid pace with beloved Elvis songs and enough love triangles to outdo the plot of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which was playwright Joe DiPietro’s inspiration. The finale’s multiple weddings leave everyone with a hunk of “Burning Love.”
“All Shook Up” continues playing Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21 at 8pm; Saturday, April 21 at 3pm; Sunday, April 22 at 2pm, at the historic El Portal Theatre.
