“Don’t retire from something, retire to something,” says former lawyer and professor Michael Antin. So that’s what he did, if you can call 10 years as a successful playwright, composer, author and musician retirement. The upcoming production of Write Act Repertory (WAR) presents Holiday of Lights – A Cabaret Celebration of Music by Michael Antin, proves he’s not done yet.

A collection of Antin’s music from the seven musicals for which he’s written and composed music and lyrics will be presented a la cabaret, sans dancers. Antin will narrate the evening with musical arrangement and direction by David Kaminer and starring William Grundler and Dana Shaw.

Antin is an award-winning composer who told this writer how he does it: “I write the lyrics first, then I sit down at the piano and just let the music come.”

He played five instruments before he got to high school and never lost his love for music, returning to piano after his law practice ended.  A cabaret singer from San Francisco suggested Antin’s songs were the heart of a musical. Soon after, Antin wrote the 70-page book for his first musical, Answer the Call. This caught the attention of John Lant, Producing Artistic Director for WAR, which also has an east coast location. But Lant liked Antin’s second musical, Butterfly, even more and helped Antin to a successful Off-Broadway run, which he has enjoyed with his ensuing works as well.
