Empowerment, Edginess, Elegance, Entertainment, and Enormous Energy is Everything that Judith E. brings to the stage at the NoHo Actors’ Studio in “The Menopause Crack-Up.”
A product of the Group Theatre, having trained with pioneers such as Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler Conservatory, and the Ground-lings, Judith E. Taranto brings credibility and authenticity to her character Giaa, instantly transforming her persona from sad to serious to sexy.
As the writer and performer of this one woman, autobiographical show, Judith E. tells her story, with her earliest memories of growing up in NYC, with her family matriarch, overprotective “Abuela,” to her teen days during the height of the disco craze, culminating in her reaching menopause and all that it entails: sweats, mood swings, hot flashes, memory lapse. With her strong, fierce “I Will Survive” dynamism and her confidence, talent and ability to carry her show ‘solo,’ captivating the audience in its entirety, Judith E. is a force to be reckoned with, and her message real and relevant.
One woman’s journey, the trials and tribulations through the mindfields of menopause, comes to life, through improv, quick costume changes, and music to set the mood and era. In one memorable vignette, to the upbeat tune of Burt Bacharach’s “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head,” Giaa faces the depressing, disconcerting news of her ‘change of life.’ This contrast of “ups and downs” is prevalent throughout the show.
Following the huge popularity of a previous hit, “Menopause, the Musical,” this creative look at one woman’s life over the edge- as she faces a crucial milestone in the female lifecycle, is sure to resonate and ring true for many women (and men in their lives!).
