‘Buyer & Cellar’ at Falcon Theatre a delightful fantasy for Streisand fans

Buyer & Cellar is a funny make believe story for Barbra Streisand fans and anyone who has fantasized about their ultimate dream job.

The super-charming Jai Rodriguez (of Queer Eye fame) stars in this unique one-person show. He draws the audience into the fictional story that follows a sweet aspiring actor who lucks into a job as custodian of the private shopping mall Barbra Streisand has in the cellar of her Malibu home. Although this story is completely fabricated (which is fiercely emphasized at the beginning of the show) the “cellar mall” actually exists. Streisand revealed it herself in her 2010 coffee table book: My Passion for Design.

Rodriguez makes the gossipy banter between Barbra and his character Alex so convincing that you believe he is telling this story based on his own experiences. He describes Streisand “shopping” for a doll in her faux mall, indulging at her own frozen yogurt “shoppe,” and just being her superstar-self. It’s mostly hilarious, and sometimes touching.

Written by Jonathan Tolins (The Twilight of the Golds), the show is directed by Dimitri Toscas returning to the Falcon after earning raves at the helm of Scott and Hem and Bunny Bunny. Toscas has amazing instincts about the ebb and flow of storytelling and this comedy benefits from his skills.

The fabulous illusion of Streisand’s “cellar mall” was created by scenic and projection designer Adam Flemming; lighting designer Nick McCord; costume designer David Kay Mickelsen; sound designer Robert Arturo Ramirez; props designer John M. McElveney; casting Sandi Logan, CSA and stage manager Dale Alan Cooke completes the impressive behind-the-scenes team.

“Buyer & Cellar” is now playing through Sunday, November 6th with shows Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays  at 4pm at the Falcon Theatre located at 4252 Riverside Dr. in Toluca Lake. Call (818) 955-8101 for tickets or go to FalconTheatre.com.
