Irreverently poking fun at popular culture, Denim on Denim II: Roadhouse of Cards blends sketch comedy and video shorts to satirize the absurdity of particular brands of pop culture. Eclectic and witty, the show takes a humorous look at relationships through the prism of pop culture.
The cast employs many types of comedy in the presentation, ranging from physical to visual to ironic. Bursts of video clips are interspersed between the live sketches, offering more parodies of songs, movies, television. Some of these are more elaborate than others, employing visual effects and dramatic lighting, while others are just quick skits.
Some of the most hilarious videos are the shortest, such as “The World’s Worst Ninja,” in which his sword often falls apart, a running gag with a dodge ball, set to cultured British tones, and a take off on Ken Burns’ The Civil War, with the post office misdelivering the mail.
The funniest sketch revolves around a too touchy-feely yoga teacher (Bettina Mustain), who really envelops her students, and a close runner-up is the “The Great Doctor Zamboni, (Allen Rueckert)” a combination surgeon/magician. “West Side” combines Jerome Robbins and gangsta thought to create fun moments.
Director Rueckert keeps the skits moving and energetic, thanks to warm rapport and timing by the cast. Sometimes the sketches run a little too long, and lose focus.
The energetic cast spits out the lines, with Mustain, Rueckert, and Matt Gsell drawing the biggest laughs for their expressive performances. Sketch comedy parodies pop culture for laughs.
