Finding an enjoyable small stage musical in L.A. is like finding the cherry in the fruit cocktail or that special piece of chocolate in the candy box: all are rare finds, even rarer when the shows are family friendly.
Haywire! is a family friendly musical comedy. Randy, who is a young bank teller from New York, returns to his small Minnesota farm town with fiancé in hand and discovers the farmers are facing the “F” word of the day: foreclosure.
Not since Little House on the Prairie has good had to overcome evil so strongly in rural Minnesota in order to live happily ever after. This world premiere by Dean Parker, with additional music by Lou Briggs, provides songs that are lyrical, singable and sparkle and drive the plot forward. Singing and dancing all the way, Randy, his fiancé Tasha and his sister Kris plot a means to turn around the town. Robert Matta, Diana Taweel and Lois Neville nicely mesh in these roles. My favorite musical numbers included the all-female “Keep Looking Around” and tomboy Kris with a delightful “I’ll Keep on Dreaming.”
The production has a nice throwback feel and has a number of fun dance numbers and infectious energy. The show uses simple staging and costuming and concentrates on the music. There is just one more weekend to cheer for the townspeople and true love.
