With Grammys season upon us, what better way to celebrate two fab decades of music, the ‘50s and ‘60s, than with L.A.‘s hottest tribute rock and roll band, Not Fade Away, featuring lead vocal, Davitt Felder; guitar, violin, Peter Waldman; bass guitar, Greg Burman; and drums, David Schultz. It’s a trip down memory lane, chronicling the events of the decades, such as the hula hoop craze and launching of Sputnik, as the band members perform popular tunes from Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and more.
A rockin’ time will be had by all, as these crooners serenade the audience quite romantically, as many dance in the aisles.
I felt as if I were transported on a musical time machine to the ‘50s, a simpler, more optimistic time. Then I was taken to the ‘60s, when, as Bob Dylan croons, “times, they were a’changin’.” It was a time when music was a social commentary. A highlight of Not Fade Away is the band’s rendition of “Twist and Shout,” by The Isley Brothers, and later The Beatles, the heartthrobs that took America by storm. Also, an a cappella performance of “Please Mr. Postman” was brilliant, as well as the doo wops that made Buddy Holly famous.
A sheer delight for all generations, the show’s an interactive experience, with beat, vocals, instruments, theatrics, and accents all perfectly orchestrated.
The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through February 13. The Crown City Theatre is located at 11031 Camarillo St. in NoHo. For more information, call (818) 942-6684 or visit www.crowncitytheatre.com.
