Shooting off sparks like any true diva, talented Shoshana Bean sensually and dramatically sang Barbra Streisand songs at the John Anson Ford Theatre Thursday night as part of Upright Cabaret’s “Wicked” Summer Nights in the Kickoff to LA Pride 2009 weekend.
Making a flashy entrance down the stone steps behind the stage, Bean, a former “Wicked” and “Hairspray” star, belted out medleys of Streisand tunes in a passionate, infectious performance. While she might be a tiny woman, Bean’s voice is rich and powerful.
Mixing thoughtful renditions of songs with hot, sensual choreography, Jewish humor and adult repartee, Bean kept things lively and lighthearted, demonstrating she can let it rip with sultry R & B sounds as well as thrilling, high vocal work. She also can be charmingly self-deprecating, especially while being upstaged by her cute, inquisitive mutt.
Production work and musical performances were all first-rate, and the use of male actors to escort her on and off the stage added a classy touch.
Upright Cabaret, introduced three years ago by Chris Isaacson and Shane Sheel as a hip update of the classic, intimate, music listening experience, features eclectic monthly performances of show and pop tunes by happening new stage and screen talent.
The first in a series of three concerts featuring Eden Espinosa and composer Stephen Schwartz, “Shoshana Bean: Shoshana Sings Streisand” introduced entertaining alfresco cabaret music to a relaxed, eager audience as it demonstrated the evolution of this white hot “wicked” performer.
Upright Cabaret presented “Shoshana Bean: Shoshana Sings Streisand” at the John Anson Ford Theatres at 8:30pm on Thursday, June 11 as part of “Wicked” Summer Nights. Tickets cost $40-$80.
