The Return of the Kink

Life isn’t usually generous when it comes to offering second chances at good things, so you’ve caught a break on this one:  Rob Mersola is bringing his hilarious, twisted urban comedy “Backseats and Bathroom Stalls” to the Lyric Hyperion Theatre again for an additional run beginning February 6th. If you missed it the first time, grabbing a ticket now is highly recommended.
Mersola’s play had its original premiere in New York in 2000, and came to Los Angeles in 2008 (For the Tolucan Times review, go to http://tolucantimes.com/index.php?news=1243). The story of six frantic, romantically interconnected lives was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and deservedly so. As author and director of the piece, Mersola said, “Basically, I try to concentrate on what would be fun for the audience to watch, and for the actors to act.” His cast is all friends from Mersola’s days at Rutgers University under the auspices of influential teacher William Esper.
Now the task at hand is for “Backseats and Bathroom Stalls” to gain additional traction in Hollywood. “We’re hoping it’ll develop a sort of cult-like, ‘Rocky Horror’ late-night following,” says Mersola. The project is being pitched for a movie deal, and there are plans for it to go to the Edinburgh Festival.
Meanwhile, Mersola is working on his next project, “Balling the Jack,” set in 1952, in which an Ozzie & Harriet-type couple begin to experiment with the beatnik lifestyle. These are exciting times for Mersola and company, and with his unique, deft talent, it’s hard not to cheer for him.

“Backseats & Bathroom Stalls – A Not-So Romantic Comedy of Bad Manners” plays at The Lyric Hyperion Theatre Café, 2106 Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake. The eight-week limited engagement begins February 6, 2009 and runs through March 28. Performance schedule is Friday and Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m. Ticket prices range from $25.00 – $30.00 and are available by phone at 323-960-7829 or online at www.Plays411.com/backseats.
