Hope Estate in Toluca Lake to Be Sold; Garage Sale This Weekend
By Jon Konjoyan
Seventy years of storied Toluca Lake history will be sold off in the coming months as the famous Hope estate, the longtime home of comedian Bob Hope and his wife, singer Dolores Hope, will officially hit the market for the first time ever.
The expansive parcel, at 10346 Moorpark St. at the corner of Moorpark Street and Ledge Avenue, is a former walnut orchard where the Hopes built their dream mansion in 1939. Bob Hope died in 2003 at the age of 100; Dolores Hope died last year at 102.
Over the years, the house was known for its celebrity owners and for doling out the best Halloween loot, from full-size candy bars to silver dollars, and for a larger-than-life nativity scene displayed at Christmas. This year the nativity returns, possibly for the last time according to Linda Hope, daughter of the renowned couple.
According to sources, several potential buyers have already made offers for the property. Zillow.com gives the house a bargain “Zestimate” value of $3.5 million. It features eight bedrooms and 11 bathrooms in almost 15,000 square feet on an 87,000 square foot lot.
Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills will be putting together a show of some of the Hope’s cherished belongings. In the meantime many items will be sold in a garage sale this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the house location including a large collection of holiday decorations, wall art, furniture, gifts, household items, and more.
