North Valleyheart Riverwalk to Break Ground
All are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Los Angeles River North Valleyheart Riverwalk Project on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m. near 12953 Valleyheart Dr. (between Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Fulton Avenue). From l, stand Field Deputy Alice Roth, Chief of Staff Carolyn Ramsay, Councilmember Tom LaBonge, and Village Gardeners of the Los Angeles River members Gail Wunsch and Richard Rabins, who surveyed the site together this week. The project is set to upgrade a service road into a multi-use trail, eliminating invasive plant species and providing for stormwater infiltration. There will also be stone seats, a decomposed granite trail, and new retaining walls.

Catch the Final Stage of Tour LaBonge!

The summer bike ride series began its second-to-last stage on Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake on Wednesday evening, traveling 9 miles through the area. The group made stops at Fire Station 86 on Vineland Avenue and Fire Station 60 on Tujunga Avenue. All constituents are invited to participate in the final stage of Councilmember LaBonge’s summer bike ride series, which will take place July 17 in Hollywood. Meet at Councilmember LaBonge’s Hollywood Field Office at 6501 Fountain Ave. Police will provide traffic control. All riders must be at least 12 years of age, wear helmets, sign waivers, and leave pets at home. See you next week!

Sherman Oaks CERT Class Now Open for Registration
The Vista Oaks Neighborhood Watch is hosting a CERT (Community Emergency Reponse Training) class in Sherman Oaks. LADWP Finishes Work on Mulholland Fountain Rehabilitation
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will soon begin Phase 2 of the rehabilitation of the William Mulholland Memorial Fountain. Phase 1 repaired the lighting and water system, including the tile, plaster work, and repair of the sidewalk. Phase 2 will landscape the day and should finish within the next 90 days. The site will receive drought-tolerant grass, trees, plants, and decomposed granite walking paths. The rose bushes and existing trees will all remain. An original piece of the aqueduct, roughly 10 feet in diameter, will be on display near the fountain’s entrance. Additionally, for the first time, the area surrounding the William Mulholland Memorial Fountain will have an official name: Centennial Aqueduct Park.

LADWP Re-opens Solar Feed-in Tariff Program for Applications
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will begin accepting applications for the second 20-megawatt (MW) allocation of local solar and other eligible renewable energy projects under the 100 MW FiT Set Pricing Program on July 8. The application period for the second allocation will remain open through December 31, 2013 at 4 p.m. LADWP’s FiT Program – the largest offered by any U.S. city – allows customers, developers, and other third parties to develop solar or other eligible renewable energy projects within LADWP’s service area and sell the power to the Department at a set price.

STUDIO CITY

Library to Have Iron Chef-type Event for Teens
Teens and pre-teens are invited to attend an event modeled on the TV series, Iron Chef. Several teams will be assembled to compete as they prepare the same type of food. Will it be salsa or guacamole? The contest will be at the Studio City Branch Library so only the librarians know the answer to this question.

The event is part of a series of programs celebrating the Teen Summer Reading theme, “Reading Is So Delicious!”
Among the criteria for judging the best dish will be: taste, team cooperation, and plating of the food. Those teens with cooking experience (such as members of the Culinary Academy at Walter Reed Middle School) are particularly encouraged to join others in this competitive but enjoyable event.

One need not have cooking experience to participate.

A selection of cook books from the library’s huge collection will be on display. They may be taken to the Circulation desk, checked out, and taken home to be read.

The program is co-sponsored by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and the Friends of the Studio City Branch Library. Those who complete their Summer Reading gamecards will be part of two raffles: one is regional and the other (city-wide) will be for a significant, electronic prize.
