Happy 88th Birthday, George Barris!
Known to millions of car enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, George Barris has been designing and creating cutting-edge cars for more than 50 years. His creations have dominated such hit TV shows as The Munsters, The Beverly Hillbillies, Knight Rider, and — most notably – Batman & Robin, which featured his Batmobile, the most famous TV Hollywood car of all time. Barris has also created and featured vehicles for scores of movies and product promotions. He’s the winner of countless awards and accolades for his kustom creations such as the Hirohata Merc, Ala Kart, Barrister, and many legendary cars of the ‘50s and ‘60s.
George Barris has written many, many books throughout the years such as; Barris TV and Movie Cars, Barris Cars of the ‘50s, Barris Cars of the ‘60s, Barris Kustom Techniques of the ‘50s Volume 1-4, and the Barris Big Book. Currently, he’s working on a new book entitled; The Art of George Barris, which emphasizes the influence George has had on the baby boomer generation through his line of bicycles, go-karts, mini bikes, model toys, and of course, his car designs. Released in 2009 is his latest book; Barris Cars of the Stars, which showcases the cars he has created for celebrities from the 1950s—1980s.
Most recently, George was honored to have the street where his North Hollywood shop is located re-named: George Barris Place “King of the Kustomizers” as an historical landmark in Los Angeles, California.
He is currently featured as the “star” judge on the SPEED channel TV show Car Warriors.
One of the most prestigious awards George has received is being inducted into SEMA Hall of Fame for his many kustomizing contributions in the automotive industry.
He sold his world Famous #1 Batmobile at Barrett-Jackson auction and made the Guinness World of Records as the biggest sale for a TV automobile.
George continues to kustomize cars to this day.
